What's got my attention - 10/6/05

TV
I'm hoplessly addicted to Lost, the TV series. It is extremely well-written and produced and each episode gets me hungrier for the next. If you haven't seen it, you can now rent season one, which I recommend you do now. I'm not kidding, stop reading, and go.

If you are reading this paragraph, you've either seen the first season, or you've returned from the video store, or you've just ended our friendship. Anyway, it's amazing. House is the other show I just can't miss. But I have fully surrendered on Alias.

DVD
I saw Mean Creek last week. I had heard good things, and wasn't disappointed. It is the story of a group of kids who decide to take some "all-in-good-fun" revenge on the local bully, hwoever, things go badly. The acting was quite good, especially from Rory Culkin, who can act circles around his older brother, and his "puppy love interest" Millie played by (Carly Schroeder). But the real power of the film is found in the silences. What the film doesn't say, and the time it gives the viewer to live in the skin of its subjects, and I mean all of them, will leave an engaged viewer chilled with painful remembrences of adolesence.

I have Tender Mercies, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring, and a documentary called Osama at home atop my television. I'll probably get to the latter two this weekend, and let TM sit up there for another week before surrendering on it and mailing it back unwatched. Despite the raves its received from people I respect, I just can't bring myself to endure it.

In Theaters
I haven't seen it but I've heard outstanding buzz about Serenity. It is the full-length film version oft he show Firefly that never got off the ground a few years ago, but had a very dedicated following. Critics praising science fiction is pretty rare, so this one might actually be worth a look. I'm told it has mainstream appeal for those who wouldn't consider themselves sci-fi fans.

I might be able to go see some movies now in theaters cause I got the game testing job. I am so excited. I start on the 17th. It looks like a good future for game nights.

I am included in the dedicated following of "Firefly." I couldn't understand why Fox canceled it. Lost Rocks.

Dan,

DON'T pass up TENDER MERCIES. One of my all time favorite films, if for no other reason than to see Robert Duvall's masterful performance. This picture moves too slowly for some people, but if you can allow the film to unfold I suspect you'll wish you'd seen it sooner.
