Mostly Martha

This film was recommended to me by one of my students, who happens to also be a very cool person. (She didn’t learn that from me!)

Anyway, it’s a charming little film about a fantastic German cook who is thrust into surrogate motherhood when her sister dies. Her only love is cooking but when she tries to show love to her estranged neice with her cooking, the girl is too distressed to eat. The ensuing emotional struggle reveals flaws in Martha’s own "soul recipe" and the two are forced to start from scratch.

It’s a delicious flick in the same vein as Big Night and Eat, Drink, Man, Woman, but it explores new territory. It will simultaneously move you and make you hungry.
