Oscar Trends - Academy Award (most nominations vs. best picture wins)

Last year I was curious about which film was most likely to win Best Picture. So, I posed the following question to my film critic friend who is both a cinephile and stats-junkie. "How often has the film with the most nominations NOT won Best Picture?" Anyone else may have answered "Not often." Someone a little more precise might have said, 7 times in the last 35 years. But not Peter T. Chattaway ! He composed the following list for me, and I think it's cool, so I'm passing it on to you.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Red indicates the winner had LESS nominations than at least one other film. (And FWIW, in at least two years -- 1980 and 1977 -- I believe the winner had the least nominations of all, or was tied for the least.) Purple indicates the winner was TIED for the most nominations with at least one other film.
