It started with just four words.
In August of 2017, at a restaurant not far from my house, my close friend, Rob, confided in me that he'd discovered a strange thing on the internet.
It was an online classified ad that was only four words long. Rob is an avid podcast fan, and one of his favorites is a fictional narrative series called Tanis, that styles itself in the DAN BUCKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04740369308981473978noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16932320.post-74804278806281960732017-12-13T20:37:00.000-06:002017-12-13T20:37:12.647-06:00Spitting at the Tree with Dolly and Kenny
My earliest Christmas memories include cutting down our own
Christmas tree in the woods near our home. The tree was usually so tall and
heavy, that traditional tree stands were not up to supporting it. So my dad, the engineer, would suspend the
tree from the ceiling with high strength fishing line. This had the amusing
side effect of making the tree rotateable, like a drug store DAN BUCKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04740369308981473978noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16932320.post-61104462945798212512016-07-28T09:29:00.000-06:002016-07-28T09:35:27.007-06:00Thrashing About in the Woods<!--[if gte mso 9]>

We have a rule in our house.
When someone says the word “adventure,” then someone else must repeat
the word, but as a whisper. This is the
reverence with which we treat new and unusual experiences. It can be as simple as turning down a road

It was a fun week for our Limerick Contest. Interestingly, all but one of the seven entries were about the same topic.
The topics were:

• Lame April Fool's pranks

That's right! If you love wordplay, comedy, rhyming, or all things Irish, then this is the contest for you! Here's the way it works:

They usually sound like one of these:
The audiences are all older people, and when they die... no one will come.
Movies are killing live theatre.
The internet is killing theatre.
It's the prices!
People just don't have long enough attention spans.
Some of the above things have some truth to them, but DAN BUCKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04740369308981473978noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16932320.post-68958244672682228282015-03-22T20:46:00.000-06:002015-03-22T21:11:35.251-06:00When "Almost, Maine" almost wasn't; a playwright asks WWJD
When I first joined the

It’s an alternately
sweet, sad, and funny play about love.
About finding it, losing it, being surprised by it, and realizing when it’s

It's because, I, like most of my generation, am suspicious of any narrative or explanation that seems to nicely categorize or compartmentalize life into easily digestible bites. I tend to think, if it seems simple, you're not looking closely enough.
I get nervous around people who:

On the whole, I saw a number of fantastically talented students, many who seem very kind, and excited about this crazy art form that I love. So, you know... that's good.

People love to watch other people laugh.
There's little that causes genuine laughter like genuine laughter.
You've seen it. When SNL actors start to laugh in the middle of a scene. It's a mistake but it's supremely enjoyable. We imagine the fun it must be to do what they are doing and we watch them enjoying entertaining us. &DAN BUCKhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04740369308981473978noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16932320.post-65058844828889316112015-02-22T21:50:00.000-06:002015-02-23T07:33:58.914-06:00Ten years wiser, ten pounds heavier
I started this blog 10 years ago. It's been some time since I've blogged regularly, but that's going to change.
I am a writer. I communicate best through the written word. And yet, I often don't take the time to do it. To process my life and circumstances through words. So, I'm starting back again.

The truth is, love is in the head.
Emotion residing in our body's blood pump is but a folksy construct.
Sure we might feel sadness in our chest, like an empty ache
And yes, you could say that feelings travel through us,
As though the heart is pumping out joy or pain into every extremity.
Some might even argue that heartbreak feels life threating, like cardiac arrest

The Veil
I don’t know when it happened
Or how it got so thick
But there it rests
Between me and the Sky.
I usually resign myself to sputtering about
Generously naming the darkness “healthy doubt”
But on days like these I try to lift my head
Straining weakened muscles to look up
And I scan the veil
For a hole, a thinner place
Where the light bleeds through.

My colleagues and I have been enduring a number of long meetings. It's lots of good stuff, but it's lots of sitting for a borderline ADHD guy like me.
